School Spellathon

13th Nov 2020

13/11/’20

Dear Parent,

We are organising a Spellathon for Friday 27th November 2020. Spellings form the school’s main Literacy focus for the year.   We would like you to sponsor the children to get as many of their half termly spellings right as possible (spellings up until Hallowe’en Break, class teachers will direct the children). We are issuing you with sponsorship sheets. Some children are great natural spellers; and will of course, find this exercise easier than others. However, the idea is to ensure that the children put in their best effort. The children should also practise these spellings at home which they have been learning since the start of term. You can send in the sponsorship money enclosed in an envelope marked Spellathon.

We hope that you support us with this venture and it is also part of our main fund-raising effort this term. P.1. and P.2. class teachers, Mrs.Quinn and Mrs Toal, will direct the children about specifics relating to their year groups.   The class that raises the most funds will get a party, where Claire, our secretary, and a master baker, will bake for the class.

We hope you support us with this initiative. We had a very successful Spellathon last year. Not only did this raise a lot of money for school funds but it was a great way of motivating the children to revise and know the spellings that they had covered. This year, fun-raising will be extremely difficult due to the COVID 19 situation. Normally, our school show would have been a major fund-raiser but we cannot do that this year. This will be the first time in at least 25 years that we have not had a show! Please support us; I also understand everyone is feeling the strain of financial difficulties. Please also encourage the children to revise and know their spellings. It will be of immense benefit to them.

We are also planning parent teacher ‘meetings’ over the next number of weeks. The class teachers will arrange a time for you to receive a telephone call. I urge you to take the call as this will be a chance to have a valuable conversation to find out how your little one is doing at school, as well as find out how you might be able to support him/her. It is also an occasion for you to share with the class teacher particulars/concerns that you have concerning your child.

Ms. O’Neill.
