Internet Safety Alert from Ms. O'Neill

30th Sep 2020

30/9/’20

Dear Parent,

The school is now regularly having to deal with the inappropriate use of the internet and other electronic media that the children are accessing at home. We are finding children who are exposed to completely inappropriate material that is totally frightening.

This material that I am aware of actually shocks and disturbs me. You can be certain, if at my age and stage, that I am frightened, a child will have no experience or skills set at all to deal with any of this. It is just wrong.

As parents, we all have a duty of care to our children to police what they access on the internet etc. However, with the most vigilant care, children can still access inappropriate material. They are naturally curious, and unfortunately, the world in which we live allows for materials to be so accessible.

I urge you to support me in this. Please be really really vigilant with what your child accesses at home. The internet is not a safe place. We find ourselves, as teachers, having to comfort and counsel children with these matters. Consequently, in many cases, other children in the classes are exposed to another child’s inappropriate material and so the chain of destruction multiplies.

Please be attentive and watchful of your child’s internet and electronic media use. In doing so, you are not only protecting your child but other children too.

My Best Wishes to You All,

Ms. O’Neill.
