Maths & Numeracy
Numeracy is the development and application of mathematics across the curriculum and in real life situations. Skills in numeracy should help children to make informed and responsible choices and decisions throughout their lives.
Throughout the primary school, children should engage in a wide range of purposeful activities which should involve them in different modes of mathematical learning, including playing, exploring and investigating, doing and observing, talking and listening, asking questions, reflecting, drafting, reading and recording.
Processes in Mathematics should pervade the entire programme involving children in using and applying mathematics in practical tasks, real-life problems and within mathematics itself.
Foundation Stage
The children in the Foundation Stage carry out many practical activities through the medium of Play. This helps to form and consolidate maths concepts. The children in P.1. learn all the concepts of numbers 1-10 and in P.2. they follow through with the numbers 11 to 20. They learn to recognize these numbers, write them and use them in simple addition and subtraction sums.
KS1
By KS1 the children learn all of the numbers to 100 in the same way. They are then ready to begin tens and units. By P.4. the children will learn how to decompose within tens and units.
KS2
The Maths syllabus sees the children in KS2 moving swiftly from working within 100 to being able to work within thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands and eventually onto millions.
Other aspects of Maths such as Shape and Space, Measures, and Handling Data are exploited firstly through the use of practical equipment before moving onto the more abstract written exercises.
